"The photographs included in this exhibition were taken between May and December of 2011 after I had the Whipple procedure and was having trouble eating. I lost 30 pounds and my sisters and friends were concerned. I saw Mary Hardy a nutrition specialist at UCLA who got me in touch with eating coach Elisa Hunziker. It was after a visit to this eating coach that I came up with the idea of making my eating public. I took daily pictures with my iPhone of everything left on my plate after I ate or tried to eat and posted them on Facebook for eight months as I gradually and publicly gained weight. I am now holding steady at 130 pounds.
During the Whipple procedure, surgeons remove the head of the pancreas, most of the duodenum (a part of the small intestine), a portion of the bile duct, the gallbladder, and associated lymph nodes. In some cases, the entire duodenum and a portion of the stomach must be removed. The surgery takes on average six hours to complete. Most patients stay in the hospital for one to two weeks following the Whipple procedure. This description and the attached video were taken from the Johns Hopkins Medicine website.
